Vihaan was one of three students left standing in the 40th round of the spelling bee. The pressure was on as just one wrong letter could immediately disqualify the young competitors.   “Commensurate. C-O-M-M-E-N-S-U-R-A-T-E. Commensurate,” Vihaan said confidently. The correct spelling of this 12-letter adjective made Vihaan the youngest student to ever win the Central Texas Spelling Bee. Vihaan’s motivation to compete is fueled by his own success. Ahead of the regional spelling bee, Vihaan challenged himself to read one million words, and dedicated early mornings to practice spelling them. Feeling confident in his win, Vihaan went on to compete at the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Vihaan’s hard work proved to pay off again as he tied for 42nd place out of 519 students. “My success in competing in multiple spelling bee competitions reinforces the fact that hard work and consistency are great virtues to have,” said Vihaan. “Kumon gives me the confidence to take on challenges that seem daunting to others.” Outside of the classroom, Vihaan enjoys hitting the courts to play tennis â€" putting his agility and focus to the test. With a passion for the performing arts, Vihaan is an accomplished pianist and even takes the stage in recitals with his dance group. Vihaan was one of 56 students selected for Kumon’s 3rd Annual Student Conference in Chicago, Illinois. “I was so pumped when I found out I was selected to attend the Student Conference,” said Vihaan. “I really enjoyed my time at the conference and made so many new friends. I especially loved the Math on Mars activity to show off my skills!” Vihaan and the rest of the attendees had the opportunity to learn from each other through educational activities designed to foster team building, group discussion, critical thinking and creativity. Vihaan shares how Kumon helps him in and out of the classroom, and his plans for the future. How has Kumon helped you outside of the classroom? Kumon has helped me improve my time management skills.
